Are you prepared for a DDoS attack?

Attackers have enhanced their denial of services (DDoS) attack abilities which has resulted in a world record breaking DDoS attack. A DDoS attack, is a common attack used to disrupt the internet usage and services of a company by sending an overwhelming amount of traffic from multiple sources.
It all begun last week with an attack on Github, which recorded a 1.3 Tbps attack and broke the previous recorded of a 1.2 Tbps attack. However, just five days after the record was broken, an unnamed US internet service provider recorded a whopping 1.7 Tbps DDoS attack.
Fortifying your IT security to withstand a 1.7 Tbps DDoS attack is a priority for any online entity. The first steps for any entity is to implement detection tools and develop a well practice incident response procedure and incident recovery policies. These simple steps will help reduce the impact of such an incident, as we saw with both Github and the unknown US internet service provider. Both companies were well equipped to handle the threat and experienced little to no disruption to their services.
These attacks serve as a reminder to all companies to be vigilant, and to continuously update their security posture. Attackers are forever looking for new ways to infiltrate and distribute systems. This week they enhanced one of their most effective attack methods, rendering more systems in the world vulnerable to the DDoS attack. What will tomorrows new attack bring? Will your company be prepared to face it?
